FOOLS
is that is ends;
and the heart I know I'm breaking is my own to leave the warmest bed I've ever known

2x05; What are you doing here? You should be resting. I cannot sleep. Zarkon is looking for us. I know how you feel, but you have to step away for awhile. It’s what’s best for everyone. //

shiro turns, sees an already weakened allura coming to continue her work, and walks towards her. he takes her hand and urges her to rest, and the scene finishes with a closeup of their faces before they’re interrupted by the galra.

6x02; You’ve done much today, Princess. You need your rest. We’ll continue tomorrow. There’s still a long ways to go, but I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together. None of this would be possible… without you. //

lotor turns, and sees an already weakened allura trying to continue her work, and walks towards her. he takes her hand and urges her to rest, and the scene finishes with a closeup of their faces, before, due to relative peacetime, she gets to do just that.

so a few things here:

1. this confirms the shallura hand touch was meant to be read as romantic. it had a romantic feel anyway, but the fact that a similar scene happened again for a ship which we know shared a canon kiss followed by a delicious yeeting of glory means that the hand touch was romantic. we been knew. but now we have the confirmation.

2. i said that lotura is just the dark foil of shallura. i was right. you can add this to the other parallels we already saw.

3. the framing of the scene with Lotor makes it feel uncomfortable and unbalanced. the way it’s set up, Lotor is looming over Allura, looking down on her. his expression does not feel entirely genuine - which we now know, definitively, is because he was lying to Allura and manipulating her the whole time. Allura is looking up at him, whilst Lotor looks down on her, emphasising an imbalance between them.

4. the framing of the scene with Shiro makes them feel like equals. even though there’s a canon height difference between them, Shiro isn’t looming over Allura. rather, they are presented as equals, on the same level; their expressions are both open and vulnerable and genuine, and the whole scene feels very comfortable and soft.

so the shallura hand touch was romantic and lotura was always the dark foil of shallura thanks for coming to the heckin TED talk fam

even the fact that in the first row, we’re focused on shiro’s face as he turns around to see allura just walking into the room, meanwhile allura and her weary state is in focus, not lotor turning around to look at her; his reaction to her pain is secondary to her weakened state, AKA, to the audience, but not to him, she is the priority

something else I noticed is that shiro is actively worried about allura and continues to be so through the scene where lotor is only pushing his own agenda and brushes allura’s pain aside. she looks more in pain with lotor (unable to stand and putting her hand to her head) so shiro is more worried about her being sick than lotor was when she clearly is. shiro and allura understand each other, he even says so, whereas lotor doesn’t agree/understand allura. lotor hasn’t lost his parents because someone else killed them; he killed his father and disowned his mom. he doesn’t really seem to care about not having a home planet whereas allura and coran miss altea so much. lotor saved alteans, but only for his own gain. allura and shiro have canonically proven they would both give their own lives to save people. I ALSO felt like lotor was looming over her?? which makes for a good metaphor about their relationship in general. lotor cares about his own quest and the fact that allura aligns with that is better for him. shiro cares about everyone’s happiness and their mission, but particularly allura in this sweet moment. he says she should rest, but never talks about himself taking a break. she’s offering to split mission planning duties with him and he’d rather stay up and do the work than have less work to do. again: he’d sacrifice his own happiness to protect hers. lotor never did or would have done that. shiro actively put himself in harm’s way to save allura when she was kidnapped whereas lotor repeatedly tried to kill her. the only reason he stopped was because he needed her and her skills.
